DocuSign "E-Signing Services Are Temporarily Unavailable. Please Try Again Later." — Causes & Fixes

6 min readWritten by Sachida N Sharma, Senior PKI Consultant (ex-Railtel / NIC) · Updated June 2026

Quick Answer

"E-signing services are temporarily unavailable" is almost always a local browser or session problem, not a DocuSign outage. Clear cookies and site data for docusign.net, disable conflicting extensions, open the envelope in an incognito window on a different network, and confirm your system clock is correct. If it fails on every device and network, check status.docusign.com for a real incident.

What this message actually means

This is one of the more misleading errors DocuSign shows. It reads like the whole platform is down, but nine times out of ten DocuSign is running fine — something between your browser and DocuSign's servers dropped the signing session partway through. The wording is a generic catch-all, so it fires for both real outages and small local hiccups.

Before you sit there refreshing and hoping, run a 60-second test: open the exact same envelope in a private/incognito window on a completely different network — your phone on mobile data is perfect. If it loads and lets you sign there, the problem is on your machine or network, not DocuSign. If it fails there too, then it's worth checking for a genuine incident.

Why this happens

When it isn't a real outage, the cause is almost always one of these:

  • Stale cookies or cached session data for docusign.net — the browser is replaying a dead session.
  • A browser extension (ad blocker, privacy/anti-tracking tool, or password manager) injecting into the signing frame and breaking it.
  • A skewed system clock — if your PC time is off by more than about five minutes, token and timestamp validation fails silently.
  • A corporate proxy, firewall, or SSL-inspection appliance blocking or rewriting DocuSign's mid-session API calls.
  • A genuine DocuSign incident — real, but the least common cause. Confirm it, don't assume it.

Step-by-step fix

Work these in order. The first two clear the large majority of cases.

  • 1. Clear site data for DocuSign only. Chrome/Edge: click the padlock in the address bar → Site settings → Delete data (do this for docusign.net and docusign.com), then fully close and reopen the browser. Firefox: padlock → Clear cookies and site data. Safari: Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data → search "docusign" → Remove.
  • 2. Test in a private/incognito window. Chrome/Edge: Ctrl+Shift+N (Cmd+Shift+N on Mac). Firefox/Safari: Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+P. If it works here, an extension or cached profile is the culprit.
  • 3. Disable extensions and retry in your normal profile. Turn off ad blockers, privacy tools, and password managers for docusign.net, then reload the envelope.
  • 4. Fix your clock. Windows: Settings → Time & language → Date & time → turn on "Set time automatically" and click "Sync now". Mac: System Settings → General → Date & Time → enable "Set time and date automatically".
  • 5. Try a different modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari) to rule out a single corrupted profile.

Corporate network and proxy causes

If you only hit this on a work laptop or office Wi-Fi, the network is the suspect. I once spent the better part of an hour with a client who was certain DocuSign was broken — it turned out their new SSL-inspection firewall was re-signing DocuSign's traffic and quietly killing the session. Off the corporate network, it signed first try.

  • Ask IT to allowlist *.docusign.net and *.docusign.com through the proxy and firewall.
  • Exempt those DocuSign domains from SSL/TLS inspection — re-signed certificates break the signing session.
  • Confirm the cause first by signing from a phone hotspot; if that works, it's the corporate network, not DocuSign.

Still not working?

If it fails in incognito, on a second browser, and on a different network, you've ruled out the local causes — now check status.docusign.com for an open incident. During a genuine outage there's no client-side fix; waiting is the only option, though signing deadlines rarely care about that.

If the status page is green but you still can't finish, something more specific is interfering — a managed-device policy, a VPN split-tunnel, or DNS filtering. That's where a screen-shared session helps: I can watch the exact network call that fails and pin down whether it's your machine, your network, or DocuSign.

Frequently asked questions

Is DocuSign actually down when it says e-signing services are temporarily unavailable?

Usually not. Check status.docusign.com and try the envelope on a second device using a different network. If both fail and the status page shows an incident, it's a real DocuSign outage and waiting is the only fix. If one device or network works, the problem is local — clear DocuSign's cookies and disable extensions.

Why does DocuSign only fail on my work computer?

That points to your corporate network — a proxy, SSL-inspection firewall, or DNS filter blocking DocuSign's mid-session API calls. Ask IT to allowlist *.docusign.net and *.docusign.com and exclude them from TLS inspection. To confirm, try signing on your phone's hotspot; if that works, it's the office network.

How do I fix DocuSign temporarily unavailable quickly when I'm on a deadline?

Open the envelope in an incognito window on your phone using mobile data. That bypasses stale cookies, extensions, and your corporate network in one move, and it's the single fastest path to finishing a signature under time pressure.

Can a wrong clock cause the DocuSign unavailable error?

Yes. If your system clock is off by more than about five minutes, DocuSign's token and timestamp validation fails and can surface as this generic message. Turn on automatic time sync in Windows or macOS settings, then reload the envelope.

If these steps don't isolate the root cause inside your environment, an independent consultant can run a structured PKI diagnostic with you over a screen-shared session and deliver a written report identifying root cause, remediation, and — where relevant — the next responsible party (CA, internal IT, or software vendor).
